My first blog… thank you…
Posted on | May 16, 2007 |
I want to take this occasion of my first “blog†to say that I have been completely overwhelmed by the response that I have received these last few weeks concerning my no longer being part of the show “FreeStyle†on HGTV. I have received several hundred emails and it has been incredibly kind of everyone to write and let me know that you have noticed I was no longer on the show. I cannot tell you how much it has meant to me nor will I ever be able to thank you enough for your support.
I wish I had better news for those of you who have asked when they might be able to see me on TV next… for both our sakes! I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the first season of FreeStyle and it is an experience that I will never forget. We had a fantastic team out in the field and also met so many wonderful homeowners who put up with their lives being invaded by a TV crew and were always incredibly kind and generous. However, I also felt that after 52 episodes, I had done about as much as I could with it, or at least, as much as the network was going to allow me to do with it. Â
Admittedly, I didn’t always agree with those at the controls of power. I felt the show was an organic thing that should continue to evolve, change, and grow. That was in direct conflict with what the suits wanted, (what the suits always want) which was more of the same. In the end, there was an event- which I called “taking a stand on principle†and the VP called “being an assholeâ€. You say tomato, I say toe-mah-tow. Who wants to argue semantics. I have no regrets nor do I harbor any ill will about how things ended. Nor was I surprised by it. It acutally is all quite amusing to me at this point. Besides, don’t they say you’re no one in show business until you’ve been fired? I guess I’m somebody! Now, if only Sydney Pollack would call. Or Wes Anderson. Or the Coen Brothers. Is that too much to ask?
I am keeping very busy and do have some exciting things on the horizon that I would like to share. In addition to continuing to expand my art business into various new markets- (and business is better than ever, check the COVERS of American Heritage Magazine www.americanheritage.com/magazine and the Uncommon Goods Catalog, http://www.uncommongoods.com/item/item.jsp?itemId=15622) I am also producing a play here in Los Angeles that will open in September. The play is Burn This by Lanford Wilson and I will be playing the part of Pale. If you know the play, you know this will show a completely different side of myself than I was ever able to on FreeStyle and I am looking forward to it. I am also slowly learning the art of filmmaking and plan to start shooting some of my own projects soon. Finally, it is my intention to produce my own talk show for the web beginning late this year or early next. All of that should keep me busy for a while.
Again, thank you all so much for your kind words and support and while I haven’t seen the new show, I sincerely hope those of you who were such big fans of FreeStyle will learn to enjoy the new host just as much.Â
That’s it for now… I’m off to NYC tomorrow for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair for a week and then ten days in the Sierras in Northern California. It is my intention to update this blog at least once a week so please check back often and please feel free to leave feedback or ask questions. And hopefully I will figure out how to add pictures to this thing in the very near future!
Aaron

hay there.
i was just wondering how you got to be a host on hgtv’s freestyle. i read your bio about your schooling and saw that you gradually became interested in art and design. but how does someone with no degree get to do what you do (or did). i am very interested in interior re-design and am a great organizer/user of space haha. i have this natural knack for it, and don’t feel the need for schooling. am i just feeling hopeful for no reason or would you suggest some schooling would be a good idea. thanks for your time and good luck with everything in your future!

Hey Aaron, I think you are falling behind on your weekly updates…:( I think you should create a show that specializes in creating awesome, stylish spaces for college students who live in university housing!! I think it would be a huge hit, at least with me. But hey that’s just my opinion I guess. But seriously I don’t know what to do with my dorm space!!! It’s hard to see potential in a little square, bland space that has so many restrictions on it(no holes in the wall, no paint). Any ideas?! Well I miss seeing such a cute host on Freestyle, maybe I’ll see ya soon on a new show! BTW I love what you are doing with the license plates!! Good luck w/ everything!

oh so sweet on you and if i have to watch the show to get a glimpse, i will., sorry, maybe not the response your looking for but you definately got my attention

I loved you on Freestyle…. I used to watch a whole lot - when it had you on - and now I feel no excitement about it…. I hope your “organic style” (needed nowadays) is shown on any future talk show. Take care, Carolina

LIke everyone else, I really enjoyed you on Freestyle. I was actually perusing through uncommongoods website when I saw your artwork. It is wonderful. I was immediately drawn to it. I have printed out pages and item #’s and left them around the house as subtle hints for gifts! Your work is an inspiration!

Hey, just wanted to let you know, you’re very inspiring. And I have to wonder if being on freestyle was one of your hardest acting gigs as well..but you always came through. Wishing you the best with your art and your acting projects.

…i almost hate to admit it, but i’m smitten as well…i very recently saw your show (or at least it’s re-runs) and was so intrigued that i googled you right away. …so low and behold i discover that you’re even more amazing than i had originally thought (your artwork…incredible). it seems as thought you’re making quite the impression, so congratulations…and best of luck in your future endeavors!

What!!!!!!!! You’ve left Freestyle! You are Freestyle! What a total bummer! Oh well. Much success to you. Duh…..you are a success and will always be. You are a very talented, intelligent and fun human being. If I can, I will watch your re-runs until I’m blue in the face. Hope to see that face on the big screen. Totally Bummed in Colorado!

Ahhh. Well, I just love your creative work! I always noticed your art behind you when you were on Free Style and was thrilled to discover you were, indeed, the artist! Heh. I do miss you on Free Style. The show is just not the same . But all things change, and I wish you great success in the future. Please let us know how the play is progessing, cuz in the jingle, jangle morning, we’ll all be following you. Hee. Love ole Bob D as well.

FREESTYLE JUST AIN’T THE SAME…the new host just can’t compare to you.. will watch old shows BUT not the new ones “cos you’re not there.. You were Freestyle to me…miss you
June 20th, 2007 @ 1:45 am
mr.Open…
No! You shouldn’t do that!…
June 20th, 2007 @ 1:51 pm
Sorry to hear you will no longer be on “FreeStyle”. Having just begun watching the show while working from home, I always enjoyed your design approach and natural charisma with people and on camera.
Having just started my own interior design business, you were an inspiration for someone to succeed even without the “formal” training. A natural eye or talent for design is a gift…not a diploma.
Anyway, all the best in your future endeavors and I will be checking your blog regularly.
Thanks again!
June 26th, 2007 @ 12:28 am
I am so sad that you will no longer be hosting freestyle. I am a huge fan of the show and
your artwork. You are an amazing artist. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors. I knew that when I did not see you in the latest Freestyle that you had moved on to bigger and better things. Freestyle will never be the same without you!! You cannot duplicate that natural charisma you had with people.
I have the Uncommon goods site bookmarked ..I love to look at yourt artwork. Best of luck with the upcoming play, movie and art projects. keep your fans posted!!!
Relax about getting older…your 30’s are the best!!
Best wishes,
Sonja Mckenzie

Hi AAron, I can’t believe that you are not longer the long-time host….You always made me laugh and made decorating fun!! Bummer to the new host - he is full of himself…
July 6th, 2007 @ 9:34 pm
Aaron!! I really loved you on Freestyle. You definitely made the show and I think that some people at HGTV are kicking themselves. You have got that undefinable “something”. I will be on the look out for you!
July 10th, 2007 @ 3:43 am
I go along with the other hundreds of fans of Free Style who miss you on the show. I am a huge fan of the show and of you….You really made the show what it is….The new host is , well, how do I put this nicely, he certainly does not have the charisma nor the talent of Aaron Foster! I hope that your new endeavors succeed with the success that you have enjoyed already. We, your fans, unite to say, “We miss you, Aaron!”
July 16th, 2007 @ 12:34 pm
After being highly irritated once again by the voice of the new host of FreeStyle, I just had to go surfing the net to find out what had happened to you as the host of that show. I miss you! I loved your sense of style, your sense of humor, and your soothing voice! I wish you the best on all future endeavors. I hope to see you back on TV soon!
July 17th, 2007 @ 1:10 pm
Gee, I feel silly. Here I am - 49 years old - and I had to Google you to find out why you aren’t on HGTV any more. You are SO cute and I miss you on that show!!!
Good luck with wherever your talents take you, Aaron. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders, and you’ll do well in life.
July 27th, 2007 @ 4:10 am
almost stepped onto the *gush* train in knocked-out fan mode, but managed to restrain myself to this: provocative, engaging., unique… you are…
but enough about you… this is really all about me:
i’ve been deprived of a freestyle w/guts (organic)… so, what do i do now…? trip over 2 la to see you in your play…? haunt furniture shows…? start a freestyleAF rerun cult..?
July 29th, 2007 @ 11:21 pm
I THINK IT REALLY STINKS THAT YOU ARE NO LONGER ON FREE-STYLE!!!! YOU ARE A NATURAL AT DECORATING!! THE “SUITS” HAVE MADE A HUGE!! ERROR!! BEST OF LUCK TO YOU AARON!! I REALLY ENJOYED WATCHING YOU YOU HAVE AN AWESOME PERSONALITY!!

August 8th, 2007 @ 3:31 pm
Ok Mister!!!
No blog updates for like 2 months!!!
I wanna know how NY went, how your play is going, and what else you’ve been up to for the past coupla months!!
I know I’m not the only girl out here who wants to know how in the WORLD is THE Aaron Foster!!!
And yeah, I’m jumpin’ on the AF bandwagon to say…”What in the HELL were these guys thinkin’!!!”
I am just graduating from college, so I’ve been kinda stuck in a flurry of papers and a thesis defense and blah, blah, blah…So, when I saw someone new, I naively thought “ok nice, they are branching the show to fill some time while Aaron is doing his many projects. But since they were still mixing in your shows…I just had no idea that you were off the show!!!
I mean, ok, this guy is alright, he has alot of energy and all. Well he is kinda like Jim Carrey meets a designer and does a show. Like another blogger said, I’m doing my best to not be disrespectful to him (The “Suits” can take that to mean the COMPLETE opposite…Stupid Bastards that THEY are) AND if I had never seen your show I’d probably like him just fine…
But someone who IS in a “Suit” is just gonna have to explain it to all of us that support HGTV…I can daresay there is not ANOTHER designing dude that we, as viewers find so damn interesting, awesome, and totally hawt!!! OK, David’s got alot of great energy and I’ve liked most of his stuff-Good choice for DesignStar. HoustHunters is awesome but mostly I watch to see their choice at the end because I can’t believe some of the houses they choose (but a girl host)…The 2 Designer’s choice shows are good for the same reason. I have to admit I love DonaD, ReMix (girl host), Whats up with THAT House, (that guy is amazingly funny and quarky, I like him) and My First Place (girls) but not for the same reason I LOVED your program. YOU have the whole package, Kid!!!
So puleeeeeeeeze let us know how you are!!
Now…While I’m still in the mood, type a new letter to a buncha “Suits”…
Have a Day!!
Diana
August 9th, 2007 @ 1:17 pm
UHEMM… I second that last part you wrote Diana!!HE!HE!
THe Aaron man is HOOOOOOOOOTTTT BIG TIME!!!
That curly hair, those beautiful brown eyes, that hairy chest, and That long and lean BOD!WOW!wink!wink!and he sure does dress nice!
I sure hope that Aaron will post some new pics soon….did you hear that Aaron?
I still don’t care for the new guy on the show as I stated previously on my other post,The new guy’s personality, voice, looks I don’t know but he just doesn’t have IT! and I miss Aarons sexy smirky smile! it’s so very very did I already say sexy!and Aarons just a nice, cool, funny down to earth, and again sexy gorgeous smart hot guy! O.K. I’ll stop now! Is getting hot or is it just me?he!he!
I guess so far the new guy is on- on Mondays but Aaron is still on Tues. and Wed. I’ll check later to see if he will be on today and tomorrow.I heard there was an earthquacke there in Califoria earlier today,I hope you are O.K. Aaron. They said it was a 4.0 hmmm….that would probably scare me a LIL I’ve never been in one.
Now be nice and keep your word! You said you would update weekly and you haven’t in a couple of months,do you want us to beg? O.K. PLEASE HONEY….PLEASE!!!!Yeah you know how to work us! You HOT STINKER!
Also If you want us to try to go to your play you will have to post the info, please don’t get to thin for the play!wouldn’t be healthy for you. I do hope you try to get tickets for Josh G. Anaheim concert on Aug.25th,it would be wonderful to run into you there.I don’t think you would be disapointed! yes I’m talking about me he!he!(and also the concert)People say I look Swedish but as I’ve said I’m Portuguese.I’ve been told I look like a cross between the late Anna Nicole Smith and Victoria Silvsdet hmmm… I think I look like me thank you!and they are both taller than me,I’m 5′6″ but my long legs and high heels make people think I’m 5′8″ or 5′9″ I do have one thing in common with Victoria S. I also speak five languages.
O.K. enough about me this is your blog after all! ha!ha!
I will be waiting for that blog update talk later.
BYE 4 now!

I’ve been watching FreeStyle reruns all summer and I’m gonna miss not seeing you as host when new episodes start again. I was so excited to see a show that involved Minneapolis (MN born and raised *w00T*), and you are a decorating genius! You definitely have a talent for re-envisioning spaces. BTW, I love the black reverse-license-plate-map-with-silver-background piece!
I think it looks edgy, elegant, and quirky all in one. I especially like that the plates are backwards so they don’t distract from the overall piece. Awesome. Miss your charisma on the show
Break a leg at your upcoming play!
August 29th, 2007 @ 1:19 pm
I finally took the time to look online and see what the hell was happening with Freestyle and why there were no new shows with you. I am now officially in mourning and cannot believe that is it for you. I wish I lived in LA so I could follow your career because you obviously are far more than a designer. But all good things must come to an end so I am happy for you and that you are happy but I will probably end my Freestyle addiction because it’s just not the same show. Your personality came through and that is obviously what people responded to beyond your great design ideas. Good Luck!
November 6th, 2007 @ 1:35 pm
Well, after how many months, I finally found out the reasoning as to your leaving. I quit watching WYWO a long time ago because I found the host most irritating. Too bad. The only reason I still watch Freestyle tho is that the talent is there, and the ideas are very helpful to the packrats of the world.
HGTV has snagged quite a bit of TLC talent, but would have been better off to develop what they had.
You looked so much like my adorable nephew. Will start reading your blog and see what you are up to.
